Author: Tony Hsieh
Publisher: Business Plus, Hachette Book Group

Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh Turns to Newman Communications for Radio Publicity Tour

Tony Hsieh is known for running one of the most successful online retail businesses, but when it comes to the publicity of his first book, Delivering Happiness, he turns to Newman Communications. Tasked with a radio publicity campaign, Newman Communications has booked Hsieh with more than 20 national and local radio interviews, including SiriusXM, WHUD-FM (metro NYC), KVON-AM (San Francisco), and Business Talk Radio.

Book Description:

In Delivering Happiness, Hsieh shows how investing in happiness not only inspires loyalty and trust in an age of constant uncertainty and cynicism, but also how it can really pay off.

It’s a hard-won insight after a long road of serial adventures in entrepreneurialism that he began as a boy. By age nine Hsieh started his first venture—a worm farm. Next was his mail-order button making business in middle school, and then his pizza-making business in college. At the age of 24, Hsieh sold LinkExchange to Microsoft for $265 million, the first “real” company he co-founded. From pizza, parties, and poker to Venture Frogs (an investment company he also co-founded), Hsieh eventually arrived at Zappos. In the early days, he was determined to grow it into the world’s largest shoe store online. He succeeded. But the real story was how he evolved Zappos from an online shoe retailer committed to superior customer service to a company devoted to delivering WOW through service to employees and customers alike. It was a transformation that might never have happened if Hsieh’s survival instincts—and his own money—didn’t kick in during the company’s near bankruptcy during the dot-com bust.
All of these insights have contributed to Hsieh’s vivid and comprehensive vision of what his company stands for: delivering happiness to the world.
Delivering Happiness encourages all business leaders to find their own way to make their company not only more profitable, but also a more rewarding place to work.

About the Author:

Tony Hsieh (pronounced Shay) is one of today’s most successful and visionary business leaders. In 1996, he co-founded a Website development side business from his apartment; two and a half years later, he sold LinkExchange to Microsoft for $265 million. In November 1999, he joined a struggling online shoe store as an adviser and investor. Named CEO in 2000, he helped Zappos grow to over $1 billion in gross merchandise sales annually, while continually strengthening its customer service and culture. In October 2009, Zappos was acquired by Amazon in a deal valued at $1.2 billion on the day of closing. In January 2010, Zappos was ranked number 15 on Fortune magazine’s annual “Best Companies to Work For” list. A first-generation Taiwanese-American, Hsieh was born in Illinois, grew up in Marin County, California, and graduated from Harvard with a BA in Computer Science. He currently lives in Las Vegas. For more information, visit www.deliveringhappinessbook.com.

Newman Communications is working with Nelson Cohen Global Consulting to share how a leading through learning approach can help bring organizations through tough times, whether a financial scandal, natural disaster, or more.

Newman Communications is working on a full book publicity campaign, focusing on radio publicity, print publicity, and online publicity.

About the Book

Today’s corporate leaders are living under a microscope. Never before has there been more scrutiny – by media, employees, shareholders, and everyday observers – than in today’s tempestuous environment. Toyota, BP, and Goldman Sachs – once trusted and respected brands – have become pariahs. While the short-term may seem bleak for these companies in turmoil, just maybe, with the appropriate focus and priorities, they will not only survive, but potentially thrive again.

But why do 87 percent of businesses fail to recover from such devastation? In most cases, these organizations have not correctly aligned their priorities for recovery, and more importantly, re-growth. Too often the immediate focus is put on salvaging customer relationships and brand identity. The relationship with employees does not receive the same priority. Leaders do not communicate as much as needed leaving them wondering what the future holds for them and their colleagues. This dichotomy results in major turnover, far more than companies in crisis can withstand, and ultimately contributes to their failure.

RIDING THE TIGER: Leading Through Learning in Turbulent Times (ASTD Press, July 2010, $27.95) shares a hands-on, step-by-step approach to leading organizations out of crisis. The book tells the true story of how one company, Satyam Computer Services, rebounded from disaster and how people reacted, responded, and courageously led in the most extreme conditions imaginable.

Written by Priscilla Nelson and Ed Cohen, former Global Director of People Leadership and former Chief Learning Officer for Satyam respectively, RIDING THE TIGER provides practical, valuable lessons and expert advice as told through the case study of Satyam’s multi-billion dollar financial scandal and subsequent successful turnaround.

The Satyam story is one that had worldwide implications and, for India, was a national disgrace. RIDING THE TIGER details what happened after the company’s chairman confessed to his role on the widening gap between the real and artificial numbers in Satyam’s books and how, unlike Enron and others, a “leading through learning” strategy calmed the chaos and helped the company recover and rebuild. The book illustrates the collective efforts of leaders and employees’ to continue essential initiatives during the crisis, playing a key role in resolving issues and putting the organization back on track.

Today, known as Mahindra Satyam, after being purchased by Mahindra and Mahindra, the company is well on its path to rebuilding. They have already called back several thousand employees, stabilized across the markets (NYSE: SAY), and embarked on the arduous journey to rebuild trust.

With RIDING THE TIGER, Nelson and Cohen have written an emotionally compelling leadership book that provides specific strategies for organizational renewal.

About the Authors

Priscilla Nelson was global director of people leadership and Ed Cohen was chief learning officer for Satyam Computer Services from 2005-2009. They are both long-tenured learning leaders (just prior, Priscilla was an executive coach and consultant and Ed led learning and development for Booz Allen Hamilton) who took the bold move to relocate their family to India without ever having stepped foot on the subcontinent. During their tenure, Satyam received international accolades and was recognized as being the best in the world for learning and leadership development.

It’s been an incredibly exciting season for the National Hockey League (NHL). The league enjoyed an increase in television ratings, arenas being filled to capacity, merchandise sales growing, and significantly higher traffic to the NHL.com website. Knowing that the playoffs and Stanley Cup offered a chance to drive even broader exposure, the NHL called on Newman Communications for support.

Over the past month, Newman Communications has coordinated weekly radio tours for the league, working with alumni from the various playoff teams, to help increase TV viewership on both NBC and Versus. What initially looked to be a one week experiment turned into a month-long partnership and one that will likely extend into next season.

Throughout the publicity campaign, Newman has had the privilege of working with such hockey luminaries as Stan Mikita, Brian Engbloom, Denis Savard, Dave Poulin, Keith Primeau, Pierre Pilote, and Brendan Shannahan. These legends of the game have been touting the league, the game, and the teams to listening audiences throughout the U.S. and Canada. The feedback from the players and the stations has been tremendous.

According to Kim McGovern, Senior Publicist for the NHL, “Newman Communications were a dream to work with on arranging radio tours to promote the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs. They came in on short notice and were able to produce results that not only fulfilled our needs but exceeded our expectations. They way they handled everything, from securing to facilitating interviews, made it an extremely easy process for everyone involved and delivered real value.”

Newman Communications extends a hearty congratulations to the NHL for a banner season and looks forward to an even better one in 2010-2011.

Publisher: William Morrow

After the success with his first book publicity campaign for ” Rogue Forces ” , Dale Brown has returned to Newman Communications with his newest title, “Executive Intent”. Brown, the New York Times-bestselling master of military suspense, is back with an action-packed tale of intrigue and technological weaponry that puts the world’s superpowers in contest for dominance of space as well as Earth’s oceans. Newman has produced another book publicity campaign, and spread the word on radio stations including: LA Talk Radio, WBZ in Boston, CNN, Cable Radio Network and stations in Cleveland, Dallas, Detroit and more.

About the Book:

The United States begins to establish the ultimate High Ground, a space-based anti-ballistic missile and anti-satellite system in Earth’s orbit, which could protect not only America, but also her allies from attack. The most controversial part of the system is Mjollnir, a precision-guided artificial meteorite that can strike almost anywhere on the planet in a matter of seconds. China responds by setting up dozens of anti-satellite missile sites around the world aimed at America’s Armstrong Space Station. Meanwhile, a series of accidents in space, the possibility of an arms race with China, the upcoming elections and a worsening economic outlook all put the pressure on U.S. President Joseph Gardner to cancel the weapon satellite system and call for treaties to eliminate all space-based weapons. But instead of negotiating, China surges its military forces for the first time since the Korean War by invading Somalia and Yemen and capturing the vital shipping lanes in the Gulf of Aden.

Now, America’s vaunted nuclear aircraft carrier battle groups are in the crosshairs of Chinese hypersonic missiles and hunter-killer submarines. Russia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and others see America’s military dominance eroding and rush to take advantage.

Newman Communications providing National Book Publicity Tour for Little Giant of Aberdeen County

The Newman Team is excited about the National Book Publicity Tour for Tiffany Baker’s bestselling debut novel. The recently released paperback edition of The Little Giant of Aberdeen County is just in time for a Summer Book Publicity Tour, opening up many National outlets.

The Book Publicity Tour for Little Giant has had much success; not only has Little Giant become a hit in the social media sphere, it has scored inclusion in Summer reading roundups nationally. Several top daily newspapers including the News-Journal and the York Daily Record have reviewed the novel or requested a place in the Book Publicity Tour. Other major outlets the Newman Team will target for the Book Publicity Tour include national, local, and regional TV stations, regional and national NPR radio stations, Top Daily Newspapers, and National Magazines.

About the Book:

When Truly Plaice’s mother was pregnant, the whole town of Aberdeen lined up to bet on the weight of the baby that could stretch a woman to such epic proportions. Young Truly would pay the price of her enormity. Her father blamed her for her mother’s death in childbirth, and was totally ill equipped to raise either this giant child or her older sister and polar opposite, Serena Jane, the epitome of feminine perfection. His subsequent death left Serena Jane to live a life of privilege as the town’s prodigal May Queen and Truly to eke out an existence with a rattletrap, outcast family on its rundown farm.

While Truly’s remarkable size makes her the subject of constant curiosity and humiliation by her peers, Serena Jane’s beauty proves to be both her biggest blessing and her worst curse, for it targets her as the obsession of Bob Bob Morgan, the youngest in a line of Robert Morgans, Aberdeen’s family doctors for generations. When Bob Bob does the unthinkable to claim Serena Jane, his actions change the destiny of all Aberdeen County.

In the end, Truly is forced to face her own larger-than-life demons, redefine mercy, and consider the possibility that love cannot be ordered to size.

About the Author:

Tiffany Baker lives in Marin County (CA) with her husband and three young children. She is hard at work on her second novel, Fleur de Sel.

Michael Lewis, the bestselling chronicler of Wall Street’s excesses, returns to the world’s turbulent financial markets with his newest book. Lewis comes to Newman Communications for a book publicity tour that had him winning over radio audiences nationwide. Lewis was interviewed on three separate occasions on the Westwood One Radio Network and twice for the Fox Radio Network. Newman’s publicity campaign also included WOR – AM in NY, WCBS /NY and the Wall Street Journal Radio Network. Stations throughout the country also had a chance to talk to the author whose last book was made into the movie The Blind Side and which the Academy Awards gave top honors this year to actress Sandra Bullock.

About the Book:

The Big Short is an illuminating and often frightening tale of the current global financial catastrophe from an unusual perspective: that of the winners. It follows the very small but very intelligent set of contrarian misfits brave enough to stand apart from the madding crowd, those skeptical enough to not be fooled by soaring house prices, and smart enough to recognize how criminal mismanagement, predatory lending and the chronic mispricing of complex financial derivatives would bring the whole edifice crumbling down, sooner rather than later. And because they were also willing to bet money on the boom going bust, these misfits made enormous profits even as the world’s financial markets shattered.

THE BIG SHORT delivers a dark portrait of modern American finance and its impact on the world, as well as a character-rich tale of hubris, nemesis and Wall Street greed.

About the Author

Michael Lewis is the author of Liar’s Poker, The New New Thing, Moneyball, The Blind Side, and Home Game, among other works. He lives in Berkeley, California.

Newman Communications brought Jerry Weintraub’s story to life with a book publicity tour that had him speaking with national radio networks including Westwood One, Talk America, and the USA Radio Networks. Jerry also spoke to major stations such as WBZ in Boston, WCBS in New York, and KABC in Los Angeles as well as to numerous local stations across the country.

In WHEN I STOP TALKING, YOU’LL KNOW I’M DEAD, written with Rich Cohen, a contributing editor at Vanity Fair, we follow entertainment titan Jerry Weintraub from his first great success at age twenty-six with Elvis Presley, whom he took on the road with the help of Colonel Tom Parker, to immortal days with Sinatra, and his crowning hits as a movie producer, starting with Robert Altman’s Nashville, continuing with Diner, Oh, God!, and The Karate Kid series, among others, and summiting with Steven Soderbergh and Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen, which together earned well over a billion dollars worldwide.

About The Book

Weintraub shepherds us from the poker tables of Palm Springs (the games went on for days) to the power rooms of Hollywood, and from the halls of the White House to Red Square in Moscow and the Great Palace in Beijing—all the while counseling potentates, poets, and kings, with clients and confidants like Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, John Denver, Bobby Fischer, George H. W. Bush, Armand Hammer, George Clooney, Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon . . . the list goes on.

With wit, wisdom, and the cool confidence that has colored his remarkable career, Weintraub chronicles a quintessentially American journey, one marked by luck, love, and improvisation. The stories he tells and the lessons we learn are essential, not just for those who love movies and music, but for businessmen, entrepreneurs, artists . . . for everyone.

New York Times Bestselling Author Lisa Jackson has returned to Newman Communications for another book publicity tour and publicity services for her latest release, Without Mercy.

We worked tirelessly on constructing a Book Publicity Media Tour for Lisa’s previous book Malice, generating national interest from nationally syndicated radio shows across the US and including Canada.

Following on the success of the Malice book publicity tour, Lisa Jackson chose to return to Newman Communications and work with our team on another Media Tour for Without Mercy, Jackson’s “pulse-pounding thriller.”

About the Book:

Without Mercy brings us a tempting and terrifying tale about a string of shady disappearances at an elite boarding school. The protagonist, Julia “Jules” Farentino, has been plagued with nightmares and migraine headaches ever since her father was stabbed to death in a home invasion. Her half-sister, Shaylee, now seventeen, has had her own difficulties since the tragedy, earning a rap sheet for drug use, theft, and vandalism.

Faced with jail time, Shay instead opts for rehabilitation at Blue Rock Academy; a school with a reputation for turning wayward kids around. Jules is skeptical of this option for her sister’s treatment-especially when one of the students disappeared without a trace.

Jules’s concern grows when Shay grows fearful for her safety, convinced her every move is being watched. Two more unexplained disappearances persuade Jules to take action. Jules applies for-and lands-a teaching job at the academy. Despite the façade of its breathtaking campus, and its State-of-the-art equipment, Blue Rock gives Jules the creeps. Even the director’s demeanor sends chills up her spine, and Jules notices quickly that the rest of the staff is less than friendly. Only Cooper Trent, another recent hire, engages Jules…but he has his own suspicions, his own secrets.

Camaraderie is the least of her worries though, as several more students disappear, Jules discovers that she is the next target of the bloodthirsty killer…

About the Author:

Before Lisa Jackson became a nationally bestselling author, she was a woman struggling to keep food on the table by writing novels, hoping against hope that someone would pay her for them. Today, neck deep in murder, her books appear on The New York Times, the USA Today, and the Publishers Weekly national bestseller lists. As those who know her can attest, this funny, smart woman who enjoys making the hair stand up on the back of her readers’ necks, is a mom, a daughter, a workaholic and an amazing writer

Author(s): Scott R. Singer with Mark Levine
Publisher: Portfolio

Strategic change expert, Scott R. Singer turns to the book publicity services of Newman Communications to help garner media attention for his first book, How To Hit A Curveball. Available in stores April 1, Investor’s Business Daily is the first to talk about it!

About the book:

The recording industry never saw it coming. Xerox never saw it coming. Employees at Bear Stearns never saw it coming. Maybe even you didn’t see it coming….

Whether it be the advent of digital music, the desktop computer with a graphical interface and mouse, a major recession, or a personal layoff, divorce, or illness, how one reacts to and handles the next curveball can be the difference between success and failure.

As a professional, you want to be ready for anything. You’ll spend hours, days, even years perfecting your technique, studying the competition, and stepping up to challenges in order to make yourself an all-star. But at some point in your life, regardless of what you do or how far up the ladder you’ve climbed, you will be thrown a curveball—an unexpected challenge that comes at you quickly and without warning. The kind that forces you to rethink…everything.

Strategic change expert, Scott R. Singer shares his personal story along with business examples like the above in HOW TO HIT A CURVEBALL: Confront and Overcome the Unexpected in Business (Portfolio, April 2010, $24.95). Being able to deal with the unexpected is an invaluable business tool—but how do you do it? Curveball hitters are not born, they are made. Singer shares a psychology-researched, self-tested process that can lead anyone to the homerun derby.

Featuring prominent curveball hitters, their stories, and their steps to dealing with the unexpected: Leslie Moonves of CBS, Alan Schwartz of Bear Stearns, Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, and Actor Michael J. Fox, HOW TO HIT A CURVEBALL is a fun yet practical book full of valuable advice and anecdotes that can help anyone avoid striking out at work (or at home) and maybe even turn those surprising challenges into tremendous opportunities.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:

Scott R. Singer has spent the past 20 years advising companies on how to adapt to change, to embrace technological advances, and to put the best strategy in place to deal with the next big thing—essentially, teaching them how to hit curveballs.

A noted media industry expert, investment banker, and strategy consultant, Scott serves as Managing Director and Head of Media & Entertainment at The Bank Street Group, a boutique investment banking firm focused on providing sophisticated advice regarding mergers & acquisitions; fairness opinions; private debt, equity, and venture capital raising; as well as bankruptcies, restructurings, and turnarounds.

Prior to Bank Street, Scott held prestigious leadership positions at BMO Capital Markets, Deloitte, Bear Stearns, Merrill Lynch, and TD Securities. He has advised Fortune 500 clients, such as Cablevision Systems, CBS Corporation, Charter Communications, Comcast Corporation, Discovery Communications, Hollinger International, Liberty Media, NBC Universal, News Corp., Time Warner, Viacom, and Young & Rubicam as well as many private equity and venture capital firms. He is called upon by the national business press regularly to address various domestic and global topics.

Mark Levine has written and collaborated on books and magazine articles on subjects as varied as business and spirituality. Among his more than 25 books are the best sellers You Can’t Predict A Hero, Second Acts, Live Rich, and Die Broke. He has been a columnist for Money, Men’s Health, and Working Woman, and a contributing editor for Worth. His feature articles for New York were twice nominated for National Magazine Awards.
